Purpose

I love going to the theatre. A couple of weeks ago, I was lucky enough to catch a showing of the hilarious Broadway musical, Avenue Q, with a good friend of mine. We had been looking forward to seeing this “Sesame Street for grownups” show for months. I’ve had the soundtrack on permanent rotation in my car for about three years now, gleefully humming along to such catchy tunes as “It Sucks To Be Me” and “The Internet Is For Porn”. Ok, let me backtrack… For those of you who are not familiar with Avenue Q, it tells the story of Princeton, a bright-eyed college grad who comes to New York City with big dreams and a tiny bank account. He soon discovers that the only neighborhood in his price range is Avenue Q. His neighbors include Brian the out-of-work comedian and his Asian therapist fiancée Christmas Eve; Nicky the good-hearted slacker (reminiscent of Ernie) and his roommate Rod (Burt) -- a Republican investment banker who is grappling with his closeted homosexuality; an Internet porn addict called Trekkie Monster; and a very cute kindergarten teaching assistant named Kate. To top it all off, Gary Coleman is the building's superintendent. Yes, that Gary Coleman. Together, Princeton and his newfound friends struggle to find jobs, dates, and their ever-elusive purpose in life.

Purpose. As Princeton sings in one of his defining moments:

PURPOSE, IT'S THAT LITTLE FLAME THAT LIGHTS A FIRE UNDER YOUR ASS.

PURPOSE, IT KEEPS YOU GOING STRONG LIKE A CAR WITH A FULL TANK OF GAS.

EVERYONE ELSE HAS A PURPOSE. SO WHAT'S MINE?

I DON'T KNOW HOW I KNOW, BUT I'M GONNA FIND MY PURPOSE.

I DON'T KNOW WHERE I'M GONNA LOOK, BUT I'M GONNA FIND MY PURPOSE.

GOTTA FIND OUT, DON'T WANNA WAIT! GOT TO MAKE SURE THAT MY LIFE WILL BE GREAT!GOTTA FIND MY
PURPOSE BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE.

Many of us go through our lives wondering what our purpose is - our raison-d’être. Not our jobs or daily responsibilities, but the reason we were put here, how we want to live our lives.
Is it for Wealth?
Power?
Service?
Longevity?
Faith?
Family?
Virtue?
Happiness?
Fulfillment?
Comfort?
Contentment?
Integrity?

So why is it so important to define your purpose? Well, let’s put it this way, given the choice, would you rather float through a mundane life or would you prefer to get closer to the best possible life for you? Now I don’t know about you, but for me, the answer’s pretty obvious.
